The History of Precision Twist Drill
Precision Twist Drill began in 1952, founded near Chicago in Crystal Lake, Illinois, by two engineers with a simple mission: to produce high-quality drills that machinists could count on. What started in a modest facility quickly grew into one of North America’s most trusted names in cutting tools. Known for its signature green packaging and consistent performance, PTD became a staple in machine shops, factories, and maintenance departments across the country.
For decades, PTD set the standard in high-speed steel twist drills and expanded its offering to include a full range of general-purpose and application-specific tools. As the industry changed, PTD remained a constant—valued for its reliability, durability, and precision.
While the name has evolved, the legacy lives on. As part of Dormer Pramet, Precision remains dedicated to supporting machinists and manufacturing professionals with the same trusted performance that started more than 70 years ago.
